The classic design is coming back. People still appreciate sophistication and elegance that come with the design. If you are the traditionalist, we have a great news for you! Williams-Sonoma has partnered with Sheila Bridges, the interior designer to Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Bill Clinton, on a collection of new pieces celebrating the designer’s love of timeless design and her trademark Harlem Toile de Jouy pattern. The design draws inspiration from traditional French toile, reimagined to celebrate a complex history and rich culture. Toile De Jouy is a traditional 18th century French pattern that historically features pastoral scenes from France. Sheila Bridges substituted traditional scenes with scenes of African-Americans doing “stereotypical activities” such as picnicking with watermelon, eating fried chicken and playing basketball. It’s iconic and genius in a sense that it puts Black faces in a context where they lack representation. The collection includes embroidered pillows, throws, fireplace accessories, mirrors and trays, as well as tabletop items such as glassware, cocktail napkins, bar towels and more. We love the story telling of Shelina’s Harlem Toile de Jouy design. And it is just in time for the coming entertaining seasons.
“Sheila’s use of color and her ability to blend time periods, patterns and various design aesthetics into her work has been a source of inspiration for our design teams throughout the years,” said Felix Carbullido, president of Williams Sonoma and Williams Sonoma Home, in a statement.
